Honoring Joe Filoteo for decades of service as an educator in Edinburg

Parks and Recreation Director Joe Filoteo was honored by the Texas House of Representatives last week.

Texas State Rep. Terry Canales (D-Edinburg) appeared before the City Council to present a resolution honoring Joe Filoteo for decades of service as an educator in Edinburg.

Filoteo served as the head basketball coach for the Running Edinburg Bobcats for 25 years. He was the winningest coach at Edinburg High with a 553-130 record. From 2008 until 2013 he was the athletic director for the Edinburg school district. He became a director with the city in 2014.

“He created ripples and affected the lives of thousands,” Canales said at the council meeting.

Canales also presented a flag flown over the Capitol to Filoteo.

“I think that one of our high responsibilities as educators and coaches and administrators is molding, shaping and motivating these young people to reach levels of achievement and excellence in everything they do,” Filoteo said.
