Yesterday, I voted against House Bill 4, a mid-decade redistricting bill not based on equal representation for our voters, but a power grab to help ensure that one party holds on to power.
Voters deserve stability and fairness in how their congressional districts are drawn. Mid-decade redistricting undermines confidence in the process and risks confusing voters who should be focused on the issues, not shifting political lines. Our priority should be ensuring fair representation that reflects the diverse voices of Texans, not redrawing maps for short-term political gain.
Redistricting should occur once per decade, following the census, so that the public can have confidence in the fairness and stability of the maps, not whenever politics demand it. Texans deserve consistency and fairness.
