Town hall meeting on seniors attracts local legislators

The first Texas Silver-Haired Legislature-sponsored town hall meeting in the Rio Grande Valley will happen from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Weslaco City Hall, located at 255 South Kansas St. in Weslaco.

It will be co-hosted by the TSHL and the LRGVDC-Area Agency on Aging.

The meeting, “With Age Comes Wisdom,” will focus on issues related to our senior population and has attracted several local legislators. Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr., Rep. Mando Martinez, Rep. Terry Canales and Rep. Bobby Guerra are hoping to attend.

The meeting is open to the public, and will center on what our aged and aging population can expect from the past and future legislative sessions. Seniors will be invited to ask our elected representatives what their personal goals are for aiding senior citizens in the RGV.

There are 4 million seniors (60 years and older) living in Texas today. The TSHL identifies the issues and problems of our peers, develops solutions and advocates for adoption of those solutions by the Texas Legislature.

The Silver-Haired Legislature is a concept that was developed in Missouri in 1977 and has grown to include 33 states since that time. Texas created its Silver-Haired Legislature in 1985.

Come and join the senior citizens who will attend this first ever Town Hall Meeting. Provide in-put. Voice your concerns. Become a voice in the legislature.

Questions can be directed to Louise Butler, TSHL representative and chair of the Utilities and Natural Resources Committee, at (314) 724-7399
